Who we are

Here at Modern Therapy Seattle, our focus is helping adolescents and adults from an acceptance-based orientation.

We work with a variety of issues: sexuality and sexual expression, communication, gender concerns, dating, depression and anxiety. We offer standard-rate therapy with licensed psychotherapists and low-fee therapy with clinical interns.

We are proud to support the sex-positive community and the sex workers community in Seattle and Washington State. We are affirming of diversity in relationship expression and nonmonogamy in all it’s shapes and forms. We are kink aware, LGBTQIA+-celebratory, and welcome marginalized religious communities. Modern Therapy Seattle was created as an inclusive space to serve clients who may have felt judged or misunderstood in other therapeutic settings.

We enjoy working with people who are making a transition in their lives, sometimes this transition is the ending or beginning of a relationship, moving to a new city, or finding a better job. We like to see transitions as opportunities for people to fulfill personal greatness; although they can be very difficult, they are also opportunities for growth.

One of our specializations is helping people date. What does this mean? We help people do the work necessary to start a great relationship, from helping people flirt, to preparing themselves for the relationship, to tools for finding “the one”. On the other side, we also guide people through the feelings of grief, loss, and sometimes anger that accompany a break-up.

what we believe

 #blacklivesmatter

Modern Therapy Seattle stands with our Black neighbors, family, friends, colleagues, and clients in demanding justice for those continuously and often catastrophically affected by systemic racism and police brutality. We know that Black Lives Matter and intentionally use our platform, privilege, and skills in support of dismantling oppressive systems for all those affected. Through continued consultation, dialogue, study, and training, we strive to provide culturally-sensitive therapy through a social justice lens.

Social Justice

The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics (2014) lists “promoting social justice” as a core professional value for mental health clinicians. This code defines social justice as “the promotion of equity for all people and groups for the purpose of ending oppression and injustice affecting clients, students, counselors, families, communities, schools, workplaces, governments, and other social and institutional systems.”

Mission

Modern Therapy Seattle (MTS) offers individual and diverse relational-unit based therapeutic services for those who are most impacted by the systems of oppression in our society. We provide counseling & supportive therapeutic services through a social justice lens. We offer services via telehealth or in-person sessions incorporating unconditional positive regard, curiosity, and authenticity. MTS prioritizes the centering of the client’s autonomy and lived experience. MTS is aware that significant disparities exist in intersectional identities that impact a large number of humans but are not always addressed in the therapy room. MTS strives to embrace humans whose identities and intersectionalities are too often ignored or not incorporated into health care spaces, including the therapeutic room. Because of this, MTS seeks to center connection and community for the populations receiving services and the clinicians that make up the MTS team. Contrary to a field that prioritizes individualism and the ideals of Western Culture, we believe decolonizing therapy is integral to strengthening belonging and overall well-being.

Vision

Modern Therapy Seattle continues to assist the training and development of new therapists to incorporate non-dominant values. Our future goals are to expand outside of WA state. We currently have expanded within Washington and now offer in-person sessions in Seattle and Bellingham.
